Becoming Who We Need To Be is a book about the challenges we face as societies, and how the decisions we make as individuals matter in those larger struggles. How we seek out, filter, and parse knowledge shapes our understanding of ourselves and of the world. How we analyze, organize, and act upon this information influences how well our ideas and ideologies scale up.In developing as individuals and evolving as groups, context matters. This is a book about broadening one's own context, and understanding how personal growth is related to societal well-being.

Becoming Who We Need To Be Colin Wright Books

I am about half way through the 2nd chapter in this book and I already can easily write a review for it. I am a slow reader and even if I were not, this book would make me into a slow reader. You simply have to read it like that. The content is simply so very rich. In fact, the reason that am only on the 2nd chapter is that I re-read the Introduction three times and the 1st chapter twice. Why? ... It's beautifully written and exceptionally insightful, to say the least. After every few paragraphs, I have stopped, looked up from my Kindle, and simply pondered, saying to myself in my mind ... "damn, I never knew that!" or "oh man, that is so incredibly interesting!". This is the book that will cause you to turn off all electronic devices (except the Kindle of course), call in sick, and do nothing but become immersed. Thank you Colin, once again, for another splendid read!

Becoming Who We Need To Be Colin Wright Books Reviews

This review is for the Audible Edition

Wright impresses me more with each publication. He's now shortlisted as an author whose work I will buy without reading the description, reviews, or the back cover; he's earned my trust as both a reader and fellow human.

His earlier publications proved him a true philosopher in possession of excellent critical thinking skills, propelled by both a curious nature and a commitment to living the examined life; someone intent on introducing quality ideas for in-depth exploration, for the betterment of self and society. He consistently manages to do just this, while introducing a vast array of interesting tidbits on a diverse range of topics ranging from AI to Xenophobia and beyond, keeping his tone accessible and engaging along the way - an impressive feat. In this book, he has outdone himself.

This particular work is timely, yet timeless; it reinforces the value of asking quality questions, embracing rigorous research, and discerning what essentially boils down to the quality of said research, source, and perspective - even one's own, when seeking answers to those questions. However, because Wright is also a visionary, or perhaps more accurately, a futurist - I'd be curious as to how he sees himself in this respect - he takes you further down the rabbit-hole, exploring possibilities and potentialities that could manifest, given a particular trajectory, introducing valuable considerations regarding strategic and ethical considerations humanity will have to make as we meet these potentially fast - or fast-enough - arriving consequences of innovation, geopolitical change, and shifting realities of "work," especially in terms of how this will impact humanity at large (even taking into account what it means to be human; Wright can't avoid that, he's a philosopher, and everything he considers ties back to that, even when he's not stating it outright; perhaps when he's not even conscious of it, though he comes across as such a deeply considered thinker it's hard to imagine him doing anything unconsciously) .

I mentioned that I wonder whether he views himself as more a futurist or visionary. I just realized that I can learn that answer, because that's the other great thing about this author He is accessible. At the time of this posting Wright hosts a thought-provoking podcast called Let's Know Things, which is definitely worth checking out (free on iTunes at the time of this posting), and he supports that podcast with a facebook group, through which you can continue the conversation. He seems not only willing, but happy to engage in respectful discourse. In times riddles with fake news, where it's easy to get caught up in a comfortable little bubble, Wright's work, his obvious commitment to excellence, and his willingness to discuss the ideas it carries, is particularly refreshing.

Now a statement regarding the audio recording (purchased through Audible) Many authors should leave narration to a pro, but Wright gets it, well, right.

I encourage you to check out Wright's work, this excelelnt book, his podcast, his earlier writings; the world needs, quite desperately, the Colin Wright's of the world; never has it seemed so critically important. Again, while his ideas are timeless, the book itself is timely. The world is shifting, evolving, faster than most realize, and consequences will come tumbling our way in a flash. Are we ready for the ethical, logistical, and emotional realities bearing down upon us? If you read Wright's work, you will at least be better prepared to meet the future fast headed our way.

If you're on the fence about this book, get off it, click to buy; the time to act is now, the time to ask the questions that matter is upon us, and Wright? Is a great starting point.
A very straight forward and logical approach to the fundamental question of self worth and direction. An excellent read that is sincere and actionable.
Colin Wright has quickly become one of my favorite authors. "Becoming Who We Need To Be" is an example of why. I was fortunate enough to come across his podcast, "Let's Know Things", earlier this year. Through this I became familiar with the many books he has published. Much like his weekly podcast, his literary work stays with me throughout my daily activities. His insights, vision, and observations continue to be a source of inspiration to me. "Becoming Who We Need To Be" is something I look forward to reading for a second (and third) time very soon.
Becoming who we need to be is an excellent look at individuals, societies, and the changes we are facing individually and collectively. Wright includes many short chapters that focus on a specific topic and dive to deeper depths than we typically reach in our daily lives, going through the motions, and absorbing media and culture from today's popular channels. Wright encourages the reader to think through more perspectives than their own comfortable self-reassuring perspective, and he encourages a greater understanding of how we use language and labels to create bubbles and our own universes. Conversation, argument, and how we approach the things we agree with and disagree with are important themes for us to consider, and Wright addresses those themes in multiple contexts throughout his book.
